Twitter soared above all tech companies in this year's "Employees' Choice Awards for Best Places to Work 2014" list released by jobs review and HR information site Glassdoor. The micro-blogging site ranked second overall in the annual survey despite not making the Top 50 list last year. The company received an overall rating of 4.6 of the possible 5.
Twitter snatched the top spot from three-times winner of best tech firm to work for, Facebook, which slid to third in the list of best tech companies and fifth overall. Google, considered to be 'dream company to work for' by many employees, was pegged on sixth in the category and ranked eighth overall. LinkedIn secured the second spot and third spot for the category and overall ranking, respectively.
"Choosing where to go work is one of the most stressful decisions a person can make, and it's natural for people to want more information so they can make better career decisions. Best recognized by employees as a 'Best Place to Work' is no small achievement. The companies on our list are being honored as it's a reflection of their commitment to employees to create a positive and enjoyable workplace," explained Glassdoor spokeswoman Samantha Zupan in an interview.
"Finding a job you love is tough work but with feedback from people on the inside, it can make the job search process easier," she added.
The award is based solely on feedback from employees collected via survey done by Glassdoor. For the "Employees' Choice Awards," a company with 1,000 employees or more must receive a minimum of 50 reviews provided anonymously by its employees.
There were 106 reviews for Twitter that gave its chief executive Dick Costolo an average approval rating of 97 percent. Glassdoor revealed that 84 percent of Twitter employees who completed the reviews are willing to recommend the company to a friend.
Twitter received positive feedback from its employees with comments such as "Significant opportunity to contribute and learn," "I'm doing the best work of my career at the best place I've ever worked surrounded by very talented people," and "Great culture, smart people, egos checked at the door."
A lot of the employees that submitted their reviews for Twitter did not have any negative thing to say about the company, unless "Too many food choices" could be considered negative.
Some employees also honestly mentioned criticisms such as "compensation is lower than the same role at comparable companies," "Lots of managers are learning on the job," or "things move very fast and requirements are often moving targets."
Completing the top 10 in the tech category of the awards are Guidewire, Interactive Intelligence, Orbitz, Qualcomm, Riverbed, and Intuit.
Intel ranked no.15 and Apple ranked no.16 in the tech category.
Twitter acknowledged its latest achievement through an official blog post by Janet Van Huysse, the company's vice president for human resources.
"No doubt each of our employees would have a slightly different way of saying why they think Twitter is a great place to work. Perhaps a common element is our shared mission that the open exchange of information can have a positive impact on the world. We work hard to stay true to our values: to fiercely defend our users, to innovate through experimentation, and to build a business that makes us proud," Van Huysse wrote.
Twitter was established in April 2007. The company, which went public in November, now has more than 2,000 employees located across the globe. The site has over 230 million active users sending out around 500 million tweets each day.
Shares of Twitter (TWTR) closed 0.67 percent up at $52.34 on the NYSE on Wednesday.
