Pokémon GO wants to spread the love and it's having a special week-long Valentine's Day event to celebrate and reward fans.
Launched a few months ago in the summer of 2016, Pokémon GO quickly turned into a global hit and a real social phenomenon. The hype has died down in the meantime and the game's active player base has dropped significantly, but special events tend to rekindle the flame and engage more players.
Previous events such as those for Thanksgiving, Halloween, and Christmas proved successful, so it's not really a surprise seeing Niantic gearing up for a special Valentine's Day event in Pokémon GO.
Pokémon GO Valentine's Day Event
Starting today at 11 a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST and until Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST, the special Pokémon GO Valentine's Day event will enable users to earn more candy, get better chances of finding pink Pokémon, and take advantage of longer Lure Modules.
"With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we couldn't think of a sweeter time to double the amount of candy you'll earn every time you catch, hatch, and transfer Pokémon," says the Pokémon GO team.
Pink Pokémon And Other Treats
As previously mentioned, the event increases one's chances of encountering and capturing pink Pokémon, such as Clegable, Chansey and more. At the same time, the event also makes it more likely to hatch certain Pokémon from eggs, such as Cleffa, Smoochum, and Igglybuff.
When it comes to Lure Modules, they really do last considerably longer, not just a few extra minutes. During the entire week of the event, Pokémon GO Lure Modules will last for a whopping six hours instead of the usual half an hour. This will dramatically increase one's chances of catching more Pokémon, so get ready to fill up that Pokédex.
"[G]rab your valentine, get out, and explore the world around you," adds the Pokémon GO team.
No valentine? No worries, with the extra-long lure modules and the other treats included in this limited-time Pokémon GO celebration, the event should be a blast for the single ones as well.
Is It Enough?
On the other hand, Pokémon GO fans and critics alike have been complaining about the lack of new content in the game, and the special Valentine's Day event doesn't do much in this aspect. While it does bring some neat treats, it just banks on what's already available in the game rather than introducing new elements.
The special event would likely raise more interest if it also added at least one new Pokémon or feature, and glitter and love and pink hearts may not be enough to drum up excitement.
Fans have been feeling disappointed by the latest updates and the new ones only go so far, since they don't exactly bring true novelty. Nevertheless, a special event is still better than nothing and those six-hour Lure Modules may turn out to be worth it in the end.
