'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' Reveals New Trailer

Captain Jack Sparrow is back — and so are his pirate enemies.

Another trailer was released for the upcoming movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. It came out during the halftime break of the Super Bowl LI on Sunday, Feb. 5.

This is the fifth movie for the successful swashbuckling Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that broke box office records and brought the pirate genre to pop culture. The latest film stars Johnny Depp once more. Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow and crew's new sea adventures are set to sail on May 26.

Captain Salazar And His Dead Pirate Crew

At the start of the trailer, a lone ship is shown in the middle of the sea. A crew is shown on deck and as he does his routine, he notices a skeleton bird on the rail. The bird flies and attacks him.

In the first trailer released in 2016, one is introduced to the new nemesis: Captain Salazar. He makes another appearance in the new trailer, looking more menacing with his ghost crew. He shows up behind Captain Barbossa, villain of the previous films. What Salazar wants with Barbossa remains to be seen.

With Johnny Cash's "Aint No Grave" playing in the background, the trailer sets the new film's mood: it is darker, grittier, and more ... dead. Salazar and crew ride a dilapidated ghost ship, its masts and hull all broken and decayed. Dead bodies and destroyed ships float as one crew quips "the dead have taken command of the sea."

"They are searching for a sparrow," the dead pirate said, referring to Jack Sparrow.

Where Is Jack Sparrow?

A new lady character is shown getting washed ashore as dead pirates chase her. Captain Barbossa appears once more riding his ship as it straddles a rift on the sea.

And yes, Orlando Bloom's Will Turner is back, but he looks gnarly with his new role as Davy Jones.

At the end of the trailer, we see a Jack Sparrow covered in mud. What he's been up to remains to be seen.

So what is Salazar's beef? According to the plot synopsis:

Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea ... including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

Disney owns the film rights for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. The franchise's first film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, earned $654 million worldwide. The second film, Dead Man's Chest, broke the $1 billion mark. The franchise has earned $3.71 billion, making it the 11th highest grossing film series of all time.
