Adults and kids are not exactly alike when it comes to preferences may it be in terms of food, clothes and types of TV program. It also appears that people of different ages have different and apparently contrasting answers when asked about questions that assess their confidence about their body.
In a new video entitled "Comfortable," 50 adults and children were asked about the one thing that they want to change in their body and their answers revealed something about how insecurities about our bodies start to creep in when we transition into adulthood.
How the participants answered shows a notable difference in that adults were likely to focus on the flaws of their body while the children tend to wish for something that could make them more special.
While some adults cited negative experiences such as teasing when they were young as their inspiration for the change that they want to see in their body, the kids wanted things that enhance their abilities or something that appears to be inspired by their creativity and imagination such as having a mermaid tail, a shark's mouth or legs that could give the ability to run as fast as the cheetah. The grown-ups wanted changes such as becoming taller and having bigger eyes, better skin and a less puffy face.
The video may be similar to Dove's "Real Beauty" campaign, which reminds women that they are beautiful regardless of their physical variations but "Comfortable" is different in a way that it was made as Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and not primarily to advertise a product. The video was made by the Jubilee Project, whose goal is to produce videos, documentaries and PSAs that inspire change.
"Jubilee Project is a 501c3 that exists to tell stories that inspire change," the organization's website reads. "Our vision is to produce entertaining content that will empower, enable, and inspire others to do good as well."
Jubilee Project co-founder Jason Lee said that "Comfortable" aims to point out how people can easily feel insecure and self-conscious about their appearances.
"These days it is so easy to feel insecure about our appearance. Whether it is because of the mean comment that comes our way or the photoshopped image we see in magazines, it can be so easy to feel self conscious about our body," the video's description reads.
