When 16-year-old Lorde released her debut album Pure Heroine in September 2013, the music industry marveled at her powerful voice and unique point of view. But her talent was obvious at an even younger age, as a recording of her cover of Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" proves. It was clear she had the makings of a pop superstar before she was even a teenager.
The Grammy-winner was only 12 when she sang the rock hit while visiting a local radio station in her native New Zealand. Back then she was still going by her real name, Ella Yelich-O'Connor. She puts her own twist on the cover, her version is gentler than the original, but still soulful. The DJ even commented afterwards, "Well, it's a privilege to hear a voice like that." This recording took place in 2009, and she signed with Universal Music Group later that year.
The singer is currently busy curating the soundtrack for the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1. She sings two songs on the soundtrack, which also includes artists such as Ariana Grande, Charli XCX and Chvrches.
