New Google Calendar app out for Android 5.0, Android 4.1: Here's how it works

Google unveils a new Google Calendar app that features enhanced convenience and a newly designed layout. It is now available on the latest Android OS. An update for older Android versions and for users of iPhone will soon become available.

One of the biggest and most important change in the overhauled Calendar app is the seamless integration of one's emails into the calendar. The new app now automates events. The feature works best with emails that deal with confirmations for a flight, hotel reservation and any other notification on schedules.

Google Calendar will instantly pull in the schedule details, eliminating the need to flip between apps or screens just to copy and paste the details. Moreover, real-time updating of events is also possible with the app.

One example is when the user has booked a flight to New York three weeks ahead. Google Calendar will take the data from the flight confirmation sent to the user's inbox and add the data to the calendar with the correct time, date and airline. If the user's flight gets delayed, the information will automatically appear in Google Calendar.

Another worthy addition is one that Google calls "Assists," which is akin to Google Search's auto-complete. As the user types in names, places and events such as "birthday dinner" or "Central Park," the feature provides suggestions.

"It takes a lot of work to stay on top of your schedule, after all," says Google on its blog post. "You have to manually enter that hotel or dinner reservation, then update it if your plans change. You have to hunt around for addresses and phone numbers, then add them to your events. And if you're on a mobile device, you might just give up on these kinds of tasks entirely. Calendars should do better -- especially on phones and tablets -- so we set out to build one that's always at your service."

Schedule View is a new layout feature of the Google Calendar, which adds photos, cityscapes, illustrations and maps to the events. This feature works well for someone who can spare only one second to take a glance at his calendar. As Google describes it, Schedule View may just "bring a little extra beauty to your day."
