Despite Microsoft not giving the sales numbers for the Xbox One, it now appears that the Sony PlayStation 4 has edged out its main competition in the console wars.
A report by SuperData shows that the PS4 continues to rack up strong sales numbers and is selling twice as many units as the Xbox One from the time both gaming consoles were launched in November 2013.
According to SuperData, Sony has been dominating with an install base of almost 55 million, compared to the 26 million units for Microsoft's Xbox One. Daniel Ahmad, an analyst from Niko Partners, has backed this data by tweeting an image of how Microsoft has sold Xbox units within the 25 million to 30 million range since their respective launches.
Sony PS4 Surpassed 50 Million In Worldwide Sales In December 2016
According to Sony, the PS4 "cumulatively sold through more than 50 million units to consumers worldwide as of Dec. 6."
This is just a couple of weeks past the console's third anniversary. The company also said it just had its "best ever Black Friday week in the history of PlayStation," which could be attributed to the fact that an upgraded PS4 Pro was released two weeks before Black Friday.
Curiosity over the new console, coupled with a reduced price of the original version, led to the best Black Friday week for PlayStation, in which 10 million units were sold and another 3.4 million units were bought for the remainder of the holiday spending season.
The company had previously predicted that PlayStation 4 shipments would reach 60 million units by March 31 and, considering how actual sales have already reached 55 million, this target is definitely well within reach.
Microsoft To Launch High-End Version Of Xbox One Later This Year
Despite falling behind, Microsoft doesn't seem to have any plans of scrapping the Xbox One platform any time soon. It has, however, announced plans of coming up with an enhanced version of Xbox One later this fall titled "Project Scorpio."
The new console will be 4K capable and VR-ready, and will be powered by a 6 TFLOPS GPU and 8-core CPU. Microsoft has also said that it is "focusing on engagement as our main metric for success" rather than concentrating on the sales numbers.
Expect the competition to heat up in the gaming console wars even further as Nintendo has just revealed the Nintendo Switch, which is slated to be released by March 3 for $299.99.
