Nexus 6 Gets Speakerphone Echo Issues After Installing Android 7.1.1 Nougat Update

The rollout of the Android 7.0 Nougat entailed all sorts of problems for several Nexus devices and Google has offered little help for consumers who experienced bugs and issues. This segment has, therefore, awaited the Android 7.1.1 update like some savior that can deliver them from their misery.

Android Nougat Echo Bug

Unfortunately, for some Nexus 6 users, the update is causing echo and noises in the speakerphone when the firmware was finally installed.

"After flashing the factory image for 7.1.1. Using speakerphone in calls the audio drops out," a user posted on Google's forum. "Also the caller on the other end hears squealing and noise."

This thread immediately attracted the attention of users who posted the same experience.

In a separate ticket posted on the Android Open Source Project thread, those who complained about the speakerphone echo also provided more insights about the extent and the variations to the problem. For example, there are users who pointed out that, after the update, the upper portion of their speaker no longer works.

A user also pointed out that the problem persists when using other apps such as Duo and Hangouts. Some sources believe that the update may have messed with the microphone, which now picks up the speakerphone sound.

Temporary Nexus 6 Bug Fix

A user can partially solve a really problematic conversation by merely muting the mic. One cannot expect, however, to conduct a phone conversation in that manner. They will have to fiddle with the phone each time they're are done speaking to hear the response of the person on the other end of the line.

So far, a number of users were able to fix the problem by reverting to Android 7.0. Unfortunately, that means going back to the previous issues associated with this build.

Google Update

At the Android support thread, a Google Project Manager has already responded. He only took key information and merely provided instructions on how to report the bug through the affected device.

The employee has so far failed to get back with a fix or an update to the action Google is taking. However, it is important to note that Google has already recognized the issue and has promptly forwarded the problem to its development team.

At this point, the consensus is that flashing back to 7.0 factory images will fix the problem. Users are advised not to proceed with another 7.1.1 update as the speakerphone echo will most likely surface again after a fresh installation.

It is also important to note that aside from the speakerphone echo, the update is also causing other bugs such as Bluetooth connectivity and battery problems.
