Free app mania: Amazon app store giving away 40 popular paid smartphone and tablet apps worth $115

For a limited time, the Amazon Appstore for Android is offering users 40 popular paid apps free of charge. The full list includes some of the most popular apps and games and is valued at $115.

The Amazon app store launched in March 2011 and soon became a force to be reckoned with in the Android app sales category. It is rivaled only by the larger Google Play Store in the Android app store category, and has grown from hosting 3,800 apps upon launch to now featuring more than 240,000 apps. Apple even filed a lawsuit at one point, ultimately dismissed by a judge, complaining that Amazon's use of the term "app store" violated Apples trademark and would confuse consumers.

Part of the strategy that helped grow the site is the "free app a day" feature that many Android smartphone and tablet users check daily, which gives away an app that normally costs users to download. Often featured on the free app a day promotion are some of the most popular apps out there. As a matter of fact, the very first app to be featured in the promotion was Angry Birds, one of the most popular games of all time.

Now, in a huge move to promote its app store that is sure to please Android smartphone and tablet owners, Amazon is offering no less than 40 apps for free all at once, through Saturday, Nov. 1. Though some of the apps have already been offered for free in Amazon's free app a day daily deal, users can catch up on those and add others that haven't been featured before.

The list includes a ton of games, including the popular Plants vs. Zombies, World of Goo and Fruit Ninja, in addition to apps like Plex for media streaming, Money Wiz for personal finance, BeFunky Photo Editor Pro for photo editing, Easy Voice Recorder Pro for voice recording and CarbsControl for fitness tracking, as well as the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English 5 - Audio Edition.

While you can download all 40 apps for your smartphone and tablet or just the ones you want, be sure to get started as soon as possible because this deal ends Nov. 1.
