By now, you've probably seen the video of a woman being catcalled over 100 times in 10 hours on the streets of New York City. But what if the subject of the video were a man? Funny or Die imagines what might happen to a guy walking through the city in a parody of the original PSA.
Just to be clear: this video isn't making light of street harassment, like Michael Che did yesterday. The topic of the video is male privilege, specifically white male privilege. As the man walks by, he's given job offers, network opportunities, high fives, Starbucks gift cards and even Chipotle. He's congratulated and rewarded just for existing, similar to how women are sexualized for just walking down the street.
No one catcalls him or comments on his appearance. In fact, one guy yells out "Hey, you look really desirable, but I'm going to respect your privacy," which some men seem unable to do in the presence of women.
By the end of the video, the guy is being carried around like a king and applauded. This is an exaggeration, but it's also commenting on how white men don't always recognize their own privilege. They don't have to worry about being harassed every time they leave the house.
The video is funny while still presenting social commentary about a sensitive issue. Take note, Michael Che: this is how you do satire.
