George R.R. Martin Doesn't Know 'Game of Thrones' As Well As You Think

You would think no one would know the A Song of Ice and Fire series better than its author George R.R. Martin. They're his words, after all. But it looks like he should hit the books once again.

Martin appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night to promote his new book The World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones, but that's not all he did. Meyers and his bestie Amy Poehler, who was on the show to tell the world about her new memoir Yes Please, put Martin to work by asking him some Game of Thrones stumpers.

And stump him they did. Meyers and Poehler read lines from the book series, and Martin had to guess which character said each of the quotes. Let's just say Martin may need a refresher on what he wrote. Although, the first book in the series, A Game of Thrones, was released almost 20 years ago, so we'll give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Martin started off strong in Meyers and Poehler's game of trivia. He correctly matched Cersei Lannister as the speaker of the quote, "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die." But then things went a little south for Mr. Martin. He couldn't figure out who said "Hodor!" which, to be fair, is a bit of a tough one. If you guessed that Ygritte said the line, "You know nothing, Jon Snow," you and Martin would both be wrong. According to Poehler, Mrs. Puddlefinch, Winterfell's math tutor, actually said that. So now you know.

You did your best, Martin, and it's understandable how you would be confused by these rather obscure quotes from your novels. There's so many characters in those things, even you probably can't keep them straight. But what I don't understand is how you could not invite Aunt Pattie to the Red Wedding. For shame.
