Google Expands Daydream VR Games And Apps: 'Gunjack 2: End Of Shift,' 'Need For Speed VR,' HBO Now And More

Google is now starting to proliferate the Play Store with applications for Daydream VR, dismissing previous concerns predicting Google's own virtual reality platform would be marred by a lack of content.

High-end virtual reality applications such as Gunjack 2: End of Shift, Need for Speed, LEGO Brickheadz, HBO Now, and a few more can now be added to Daydream VR's growing list of mobile VR apps.

Gunjack 2: End of Shift

Users would have to pay premium to play Gunjack 2: End of Shift, the sequel to Gunjack, a high-octane shooter set in space, which was first playable on Samsung Gear VR headsets. TechCrunch's Darrell Etherington was able to test-drive few Daydream VR applications including Gunjack 2, claiming that the game is "much-improved on Daydream VR" as compared with Gear VR.

Gunjack 2 is designed with controls that take advantage of the Daydream VR controller instead of straining players' neck by constant craning. The controller aim, according to Etherington, excels in accuracy in terms of movement tracking. There's also a smart swipe system for using in-game items. Overall, Gunjack 2 is a complex shooter that makes for a strategic VR gaming experience.

Gunjack 2: End of Shift is now available on the Play Store for $12.99.

Need for Speed No Limits VR

Any gamer who has played a racing game in the past 10 years knows by some measure what Need for Speed No Limits VR is, so people would probably find Electronic Arts' car racing title familiar already.

Car racing is one of the genres that fit the VR platform perfectly, and EA's Need for Speed should stand as a pretty worthy Daydream VR title for the time being, as racing games for Daydream are far and few in between. The graphics and controls are pretty creditable, but not anything revolutionary. Need for Speed, however, is still a worthwhile consideration for a definitive racing title for Daydream.

Need for Speed No Limits VR will launch on Dec. 15 on the Play Store for $19.99.

Wands

Set in London in the 1880s, Wands will let players take on the role of a mysterious "Wielder" to concoct spells and spar with other Wielders to acquire fame and power in a place called The Beyond. It's the first fully mobile VR experience centered on magical duels against other players online. If that still doesn't sell it, what will?

Wands is available now on the Play Store for $5.99.

Other Daydream VR Apps

There's also two new HBO apps for Daydream: HBO Now and HBO Go, both of which take the company's video streaming platform and integrates it into VR experiences. Google has also confirmed that Netflix is headed for Daydream.

There's also LEGO Brickheadz Builder VR for the more creative folks, a game from Aspyr for the horror junkies, and Arcslinger for fans of Western-inspired shooters.

Overall, the list is still too few for someone in their right mind to call sizable, but it's great news that Google is slowly expanding the Daydream VR's library incrementally.
