Donut selfie claims to be new viral video sensation -- Is this really a thing? [Video]

An ex-Microsoft employee has come up with what she thinks is a revolutionary way to take a selfie and is attempting to publicize it with press releases and a dedicated website she hopes will make it viral.

Karen Cheng of San Francisco is on a mission. She wants the "donut selfie" to become the next viral video sensation. She's no stranger to attempts at engineered viral videos, having already posted a video documenting her attempts to learn how to dance over the course of 100 days.

Cheng started the website Give It 100, where other people can give themselves similar 100-day challenges, document their progress, and invite user comments. Based on the Alexa rankings, it looks as if interest in Give It 100 has dropped precipitously since its initial push and that Cheng was compelled to now come up with the next big, or even medium, thing.

One day, she says she and a friend "were doing sweeping camera motions around the head trying to make optical illusions. I did one that was from one side of my head to the other -- made a donut around my head -- and the video started looping and woahhhh that looks cool. Soon enough I was running all around the city trying to get cool shots, playing with slo-mo effects and iPhone lens attachments, and this is the result!"

What Cheng purports to have now "invented" is a 360-degree panoramic view of the subject taken in different scenarios and edited and spliced together to look, as she puts it, "cool." To make a donut selfie, you have to spin your smartphone around your head in various locations and then compile the footage.

On her website and in a slew of recent press releases, Cheng gushes about the infinite possibilities of her incredible discovery: "I'd love to see what others come up with -- there's so many ways this can be extended. Donut selfie on trips, double donut selfies of couples where the camera goes in one person's head and through the other. Or using it to tell a story, or to show off different looks/makeup/costumes."

We'll let you decide if you agree that this has any chance of being the next craze or if this donut is a do-not. Watch the following video and don't forget to let us know what you think in the comments section below!
