Samsung Gear Fit 2 Gets Software Update: Auto Pause Feature, New Workout Tracking Options

Samsung is now rolling out an update to Gear Fit 2 and fans should be quite pleased because it introduces key improvements that allow greater tracking precision, a factor critical for its fitness-minded owners.

New Auto Pause Feature For Activity Tracking

Updated devices should be able to stop tracking if its wearer stops an activity through the new auto pause feature. It will automatically begin tracking again if it detects that the owner has resumed activity.

Aside from the fact that it showcases a higher level of tracking accuracy, this new functionality can prove convenient for users who previously had to tinker with controls in order to pause and resume tracking. Now, they merely have to proceed with an activity, leaving the fitness band to do all its work in the background.

Dynamic Workout Tracking

The update also expands the dynamic workout tracking. Before, the only supported exercises include walking, rowing and some repetitive activities. Now, the Gear Fit 2 will be able to log sessions for basketball, badminton, dancing and soccer, among other fun and complex activities as Dynamic Workouts.

Tracking will kick in after the user has engaged in one of these activities for 10 minutes.

"The device is capable of recording several other common and engaging fitness activities as well, providing users with more freedom - and motivation - to optimize their exercise in the manner they prefer," Samsung said in an official statement.

Streamlined Sets

Samsung also touts the new set tracking feature for the Gear Fit 2. It involves a more streamlined management of repetition-based exercises like crunches, lunges, squats and star jumps.

The feature allows users to feed the wearable with the desired number of sets and it will start monitoring the progress per set. The Gear Fit 2 is even capable of factoring in break intervals so that the flow of the workout is documented accurately.

How To Install The Update

Gear Fit 2 users should receive a notification on their Quick Panel that an over-the-air firmware update is available for download. It will be installed using the Samsung Gear app. After launching it, navigate to the "Get new apps" option and tap "Samsung Galaxy Apps." Apps that have available updates are indicated by a marker and the new Gear Fit 2 firmware will be listed accordingly.

If you are not be able to see the update yet that is because it is currently rolling out by regions. You may be assured, however, that it will be heading your way soon. It is not yet clear if the update will also work for the first-generation Samsung Gear Fit.
