J.K. Rowling is releasing a new story about Dolores Umbridge on Halloween

J.K. Rowling is treating us all to another short story about the wizarding world this Halloween. The author of the Harry Potter series is releasing new material on Pottermore detailing the life of Dolores Umbridge. Harry and his friends faced off against the one-time Hogwarts headmistress in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

"Umbridge is not only one of the most malicious Potter characters— she is the only person other than Lord Voldemort to leave a permanent physical scar on Harry," a statement posted on Pottermore said. This refers to when Umbridge forced Harry and his fellow students to write with quills that use the blood of the writer as ink, etching the words they write into their hands.

The 1,700-word story will be available on Pottermore on Oct. 31. Rowling will go into Umbridge's backstory and share her own thoughts on the character. Perhaps the piece will give some new insight into how Umbridge became so evil.

Rowling has written multiple new stories for Pottermore this year. In July, she published a gossip column from the Quidditch World Cup written by Rita Skeeter, and in August she posted a piece about the life of singing witch Celestina Warbeck.
