Even Stephen Hawking couldn't resist joining Facebook

This has been a great week for the world's most beloved senior citizens on social media.

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright engaged in a hilarious Twitter war with Conan O'Brien on Oct. 23. Queen Eizabeth II wrote her first tweet on Oct. 24. And now, acclaimed astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has posted his first message on Facebook. Who says old people don't know how to use new technology?

Here are Hawking's first words on Facebook:

Isn't that just the best thing anyone has ever posted on social media ever? Hawking just put your first Facebook post to shame.

He also posted a video of him introducing his children taking part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, which was originally published on YouTube on Aug. 26. Hawking was diagnosed with the condition when he was 21 years old, and in the video, he encourages viewers to donate to the U.K.-based Motor Neurone Disease Association. Less than a day on Facebook, and Hawking is already trying to revive Summer 2014's most popular meme. Well done, sir.

Of course, Hawking knows a thing or two about science and technology, so his arrival on social media is not all that shocking. It's more like, what took him so long? According to his Facebook page, Hawking's other profiles around the web are on Rhapsody, Spotify, IMDB and MySpace, of all places. There are a few Stephen Hawking accounts on Twitter, but none of them are verified, and they don't seem to be official.

Hawking technically joined Facebook on Oct. 7, although he really only published photos of himself on his profile back then. Now that Hawking has officially joined the masses in their addiction to Facebook, we can only speculate what his future posts will look like. Will he drop some crazy, new theories about the universe on the daily? Will he post the results of his BuzzFeed quizzes? Will he broadcast his latest Farmville achievements? I don't know, but I definitely can't wait to find out.
