Asgardia, the newly launched space nation conceived by Igor Ashurbeyli, has declared that it will seek the recognition of United Nations and also enlist the support of nations around the world.
The space nation, which was launched in Paris last October, had invited people to become its citizens and drew a huge response. During the launch, Asgardia's founding father explained the vision of the grand project as a floating nation which will have expat Earthlings working to protect the Earth from the assault of asteroids, solar flares, space junk and other threats in space.
Space Nation As One With Countries From Earth
The Asgardian boss said he would represent the space nation in the talks with Earth countries and the UN to seek the world body's membership and recognition as a full-fledged state. Ashurbeyli also said he would work with global experts for talks with countries and the UN.
Global cooperation, increased access to space, expansion of technology and research are some of the goals of Asgardia.
"One month has passed since I announced the creation of the first Space Nation — Asgardia. We thought that the first 100,000 future Asgardians would register by the end of 2016, but we reached our target within the first 40 hours! And over 500,000 during the first 20 days," Ashurbeyli said.
Ashurbeyli is a scientist, businessman, and innovator with a Ph.D. in Engineering and specialization in Computer Science. He founded Socium in 1988 with the motto "Per Socium Ad Astra" paying emphasis on cooperation in humanity's path toward the exploration of space.
Constitution In The Making
The citizens of Asgardia have been told that the Space Nation will have a set of core values and the work will soon begin on a constitution.
Ashurbeyli said Unity of Asgardia will be paramount and he would announce the core values that will be the basis of the Asgardian Constitution.
A forum will also be opened for people from all walks of life to come together and plan the future of the space nation. The founder said Asgardia will have its flag, anthem, and insignia created by citizens and will be chosen through online competitions. Ashurbeyli urged citizens to sustain the current momentum around Asgardia.
"During the first month of its existence, Asgardia has expanded at the speed of light- just like a space nation should. Let's keep that dynamism going!"
Ashurbeyli's company Aerospace International Research Center (AIRC) was established in 2013 and is backed by an international team having extensive experience in the high-tech industry and start-ups from all over the world.
In 2010, Ashurbeyli was awarded Russia's State Science & Technology Prize for his achievements.
Asgardia takes its name from Norse mythology. Its logo features a spaceship that sports the Eye of Horus, which is an Egyptian symbol of protection, reinforcing Asgardia's mission to protect the Earth from asteroids and other objects.
