Iconic hit sitcom Will & Grace appears to be set for a return as new reports indicate the entire cast is in talks with NBC for a revival, 10 years after the show aired its final episode. An online video episode reuniting the cast aired last month and quickly went viral, leading to a social media outcry for more from fans of the show.
At the end of September, without prior warning, members of the cast of Will & Grace started teasing some sort of reunion of the show via their respective social media accounts, which cryptically declared that "Will & Grace Is Back." The posts had fans buzzing about what the meaning of the message was, and it wasn't long before they found out - the entire cast had reunited for an online election-themed mini episode of the series.
The reunion was a hit with fans as the video went viral. Observers remarked that the chemistry between the show's stars remained tight and the characters looked almost the same, even though a decade had passed. The original writing team for the show created the script that included tons of laughs, and had former viewers clamoring for more. Soon, rumors ensued that there might indeed be a full-fledged reboot of the show in the works.
Streaming Reboot Speculation
With the landscape of television having changed enormously since the show's run, speculation turned to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu as possible new homes for the series. After all, hungry video streamers had resurrected former hits such as Full House, Gilmore Girls and The Mindy Project, so why not Will & Grace? The lack of network censorship would allow the team to explore racier topics and use language not allowed in prime time.
Debra Messing, who starred as Grace Adler in the show, agreed.
"If there was a Will & Grace 2.0, my wish is that we did 10 [episodes] on, like, Netflix or Amazon or somewhere where it could be the naughty version of Will & Grace," she explained. "Because you know we were on network television and there were certain lines of common storytelling that we were limited to so it would be fun to kind of go into that world where nothing is held back."
NBC Revival In The Works
It appears, however, that a revival of the show has now found a potential home at its former network, NBC. Reports have just surfaced that series creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, and stars Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes are in talks with their former network's sister studio Universal Television to produce a limited run of new episodes of the series.
Details are scarce, but the outpouring of social media interest in the show seems to have created the momentum for the revival to occur, and if all goes well we could have the gang from Will & Grace back on our screens in 2017.
