Spotify has announced that Drake's "One Dance" is now the most streamed song of all time on the world's most popular music streaming service. The track has amassed more than 880 million streams since its release this April, and passed the former champion, EDM track "Lean On" by Diplo's Major Lazer project.
Drake's "One Dance" is the definition of a smash hit. The track, Drake's first ever number one single, topped Billboard's Hot 100 pop charts for 10 nonconsecutive weeks this spring and summer, and topped both Billboard and Spotify's streaming songs charts for practically the entire summer season.
The tune has already been officially named the "song of the summer" 2016 and is on track to become the top pop hit of the entire year (although The Chainsmokers current massive hit "Closer" could give it a run for its money).
Now, Drake has another notch in his belt as the song has now been officially named as the most streamed song ever on Spotify. The most popular music streaming service worldwide just announced the accomplishment via Twitter.
The achievement is remarkable considering the short time frame in which the feat was accomplished. "One Dance" has only been available for streaming via Spotify since April of this year, meaning the 882 million streams and counting were racked up in a period of only around six months.
The song saw an evolution in Drake's sound to include the Caribbean rhythms that are currently extremely popular these days on both the radio and the dancefloor, which widened his appeal in non U.S. territories and helped him gain new fans.
The track now surpasses the former leading song on Spotify's total streams list, "Lean On," by Major Lazer featuring MØ and DJ Snake. The streaming service announced "Lean On" as the champion in November of 2015, and it held that position until Drake recently surpassed it.
The streaming success of "Lean On" can be differentiated from that of Drake in that it accomplished the feat without ever having hit the top of Billboard's Hot 100, and underscored the potential of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) which has since experienced a surge in popularity on radio as well as on the pop charts.
"Lean On" still remains the second most streamed song ever on Spotify, right behind Drake, with more than 875 million streams.
