HBO just released the first trailer for its upcoming mini-series Big Little Lies, and from the looks of it this show will be all everyone will be talking about when it premieres in 2017.
Created by David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal) and directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Dallas Buyer's Club, Wild), Big Little Lies is based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Liane Moriarty.
Those who have read the novel know how exciting it will be to get to see the story plays out on the small screen. Those who haven't read it yet might want to now (you won't be able to put this page-turner down) to be able to understand the hype and compare it to the book, or might instead opt to wait and be surprised to see what happens each week to week.
The series will include seven episodes that follows the story of three mothers who become close friends. The women all are dealing with their own personal struggles, which include abuse and divorce among other relationship issues, along with one of their children being accused repetitively for being a bully.
Along with small secrets being revealed throughout the story, it all leads up to who is behind the murder that happens during the school's anticipated Trivia Night - and the killer will shock you.
The novel itself is filled with raw emotions from the women - especially when it comes to the domestic violence one of the characters endures - but is also lighthearted at times and has been praised for being the perfect "chick lit" kind of title.
Despite the serious topics addressed in the book, the series is being described as a "dark comedy," with the comedy helping to balance out some of the more tough moments.
Moriarty does an excellent job at pacing the story and building up the suspense, so the reader (and surely the viewer) is left wondering who is behind all the secrets and lies until the end. The trailer for the HBO series does the same thing by teasing its sexy vibe and coming to a bang with the sound of a gunshot.
There are lots of twisted tales along the ride, which will help to make the new series everyone's next obsession.
While the story is enough to leave a viewer hooked after each chapter, Big Little Lies features an all-star cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley in the three lead roles.
Also starring in the series is Laura Dern, Adam Scott, James Tupper, Alexander Skarsgård and Zoë Kravitz.
This lineup of actors alone is enough to have audiences ready to check out the series, while the trailer further adds to its mystery and charm.
Big Little Lies will premiere on HBO in 2017, with no official date yet announced. Check out the first teaser below.
