Love has no bounds. It doesn't care about race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
And while both Apple and Google are taking strides to have their emojis be more diverse when it comes to gender and race, the same isn't true for the representation of all kinds of couples.
Emojis to represent love have definitely come a long way. There are now characters to represent same-sex couples including the one with two men or two women holding hands, with a heart between them and kissing with a heart between them. Apple even included the rainbow flag to LBGTQ pride with the release of iOS 10 along with various kinds of families such as single parents and same-sex couples with kids.
And while there are options to choose skin tones for many of the single-character emojis, this is not yet the case for couples.
But now interracial couples are finally getting emojis that better represent their relationships thanks to a new keyboard extension app.
Dubbed Love-Moji, this app provides a way not only for couples of all races, but also for gay and lesbian couples of varying ethnicities to express themselves via texts or on social media.
Launched on Tuesday, Oct. 4, the app is created by Focus Features in celebration of the upcoming movie Loving. Directed by Jeff Nicholas, Loving follows the true story of the interracial couple Richard (Joel Egerton) and Mildred (Ruth Negga) as they take their case to the Supreme Court after their marriage was found to violate the law in Virginia in 1967.
Available for iOS, the new emoji keyboard app features couples of various skin and hair colors holding hands, with a heart and kissing. The interracial couple emojis make sure to include both those in heterosexual and same-sex relationships in all the various options.
Users can then share the emojis via text, email, on Facebook, Messenger, Twitter and more. Just remember to enable the keyboard extension in the iPhone's Settings to be able to start sending them.
We can only hope that the Unicode Consortium adds interracial couples into the mix of things in the near future. But this app isn't the only way couples from different races can express themselves. Twitter also launched its own interracial character to accompany the hashtag #VoteLoving.
Love-Moji is available to download for free in the App Store and via VoteLoving.com.
The movie Loving hits theaters on Nov. 4. Check out the trailer below.
