If there is a limit to how unlucky one man can be in a lifetime, then one man from Australia needs to get the memo.
A 21-year-old man wound up in the hospital earlier this week after he was bitten by a spider on his penis, and to make matters worse, it was the second time that he was bitten there this year.
The man, only known as "Jordan," was sitting on a portable toilet at a Sydney building site on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when he was bitten by a spider on the penis. He didn't actually see the spider, so he was unable to identify its species; however, he felt a sting he became familiar with because of a previous incident from April 27. Back then, he was bitten by a redback spider, the Australian cousin of the infamous black widow spider, on his penis during a visit to a work site's portable toilet.
Jordan was promptly hospitalized after the first incident, and while it didn't have any lasting effects on his physical health, it did have lasting effects on his psyche. Since then, he has avoided using portable toilets, and even when he resigned himself to using one, he took several precautions to make sure it was safe.
"After the first time it happened, I didn't really want to use one again," he said. "[But the] toilets got cleaned that day, and I thought it was my opportunity to go use one. Had a look under both seats, and then I sat down, did my business. Next thing you know, I'm bent over in pain."
As if things weren't bad enough, Jordan notes that the new spider bite was on "pretty much the same spot" as the last one.
The second bite feels "a bit sorer," he said during an interview with Sydney radio personalities Kyle and Jackie O. "It's redder, a bit more swollen, it hurts a bit more. I got tetanus and anti-venom yesterday."
When questioned on why he's so prone to spider bites, Jordan responded: "I don't know. Just unlucky, I guess."
Just how unlucky is he? According to the radio hosts, the chances of him being bitten by a spider on the penis twice in lifetime is 1 in 100 million. He managed to beat those odds in a little under six months, effectively making him the unluckiest man in Australia.
Despite his poor luck, Jordan is looking to get back to work soon. However, he certainly has reservations about using the toilet there once he does.
"I think I'll be holding on for dear life to be honest," he said.
