Sony sets new record in the UK with 250,000 PS4 units sold in 48 hours

The Sony PlayStation 4 is now the fastest-selling video game console in the history of the United Kingdom. A week after its release, the PS4 eclipsed the sales record held by the PSP for eight years and surpassed the launch-week figures posted by the PS3 and Xbox One.

Sony's handheld gaming device PSP has its record pegged at 180,000 units sold during its first three days in the market, but the latest report shows how the latest gaming hardware of the company has easily broken the record.

The news was revealed by GfK Chart-Track although the firm did not release official figures. However, computer and video trading site MCV reported that its retail sources estimated PS4 sales to be around 250,000 units in 48 hours compared to Xbox One's 150,000. The sale of PS4 translates to £87 million pounds to the coffers of Sony.

While the population of the United States is bigger than that of the United Kingdom's, analysts said that the early sales results might be reflective of consumer sentiments.

"...obviously it's important to note the rather large sales disparity between the PS4 and the Xbox One. The 100K gap is pretty significant given the total sales of each, and it echoes earlier sentiments that while One and PS4 sales are thought to be relatively close in America, the PS4 has the edge around the world," Forbes contributor Paul Tassi wrote.

"We'll need more data to make a declarative statement about that, but so far Sony seems like they're having a better overall launch as many predicted," Tassi added.

The PS4 was launched in the UK on Friday where just like in the U.S, throngs of gamers lined up outside stores to get hold of the newest video game console from Sony.

"Like North America, the UK is a huge priority for us because it sits at the front-end of appetite for new technology. With PS4, stock allocation in the UK is very healthy indeed and we go into this ready and willing and break our own previous launch record," said managing director of PlayStation in the UK Fergal Gara, when interviewed by Computerandvideogames.com a day before the PS4 launch in the region.

Meanwhile, PS4 game charts reported by GfK Chart-Track showed that "Killzone" is on top at the moment with "Fifa 14" settling for second and "Battlefield 4" for third spots. "Ghosts" is pegged at the fourth spot while "Assasin's Creed IV: Black Flag" settled for fifth.
