Everyone has their favorite local coffee shop, whether it's Starbucks for its convenience or an indie haunt that feels like home. But which city is actually the best for those always in need of a caffeine fix?
Seattle may be the birthplace of Starbucks, but it turns out Portland is the city with the best coffee, according to Travel + Leisure's eighth annual "America's Favorite Cities" survey. Portland has come to earn a reputation as a haven for hipsters, so it makes sense that it would have some exceptional options to appease that java-loving crowd. This city is also the home of Stumptown Coffee Roasters, whose popularity reaches beyond the Oregon border.
Travel + Leisure provided little blurbs on each of the top 20 cities with the best coffee, which includes some reasons on why they're the best, along with some recommendations on where you should get a cup of joe in that metropolis. However, we all know the real arbiter of taste in any city is Yelp. In case you find yourself in one of these coffee capitals of the U.S. in the near future, here are the highest-rated establishments in the Coffee & Tea category on Yelp for the top 10 best cities for coffee that you might want to check out.
1. Portland, Ore.: Pip's Original Doughnuts
Not only do you get coffee at Pip's Original Doughnuts, but you also get its partner in crime.
2. Seattle, Wash.: Cafe Besalu
I would venture to say that the pastries you can get to accompany your cup of joe at Cafe Besalu are slightly better than those La Boulange treats at Starbucks.
3. Providence, R.I.: Pastiche
These fancy desserts will make your experience chugging down coffee oh so fancy.
4. Albuquerque, N.M.: Espresso Fino
When coffee just isn't enough.
5. Houston, Texas: El Bolillo Bakery
Have a cafe con leche at this Mexican bakery.
6. New Orleans, La.: Angelo Brocato
A cup of hot coffee and a scoop of gelato is a winning combination at this New Orleans spot.
7. Kansas City, Mo.: Quay Coffee
If you're looking for intricate latte art, this place is for you.
8. Portland, Maine: Tandem Coffee Roasters
Don't let the name fool you. You don't have to drink coffee while riding a bicycle if you don't want to.
9. Louisville, Ky.: Sunergos Coffee
Their logo features a rabbit, tortoise and elephant. What's not to love?
10. Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.: Bull Run Coffee Bar
This coffee shop also has an animal-themed logo, obviously, and it's cool beans.
