According to a recent report, WWE legend Hulk Hogan is pushing for a match against John Cena in what would no doubt be an epic endnote for Hogan's wrestling career.
The news comes from the subscriber-only Wrestling Observer Newsletter, where Dave Meltzer writes Hogan is keen on stepping into the ring one final time.
"Hulk Hogan has pushed for a match with Cena," Meltzer writes. "If he's willing, and can pass the physical, they could do a retirement match. Hogan hasn't wrestled at a WrestleMania since 2003 and will be almost 61 at match time, so if he can't do it this year, that should be it."
As Bleacher Report writes, both stars are great performers and could make for an entertaining feud. It would definitely be a huge pay-per-view event if the reports turns out to be true and would surely make headlines.
Still, there are a number of risks that could potentially cause the WWE to hesitate on making the dream match a reality. Hogan's age and health are unquestionably a factor. Even if he does manage to pass a physical test, it won't be like the days of old. Playing it too safe might come off as boring, whereas being not safe enough could result in a serious injury for Hogan. The last thing the WWE wants is for Hogan to end his career on a sour note with an unexciting match or painful injury.
Rumors have also be circulating that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson may be returning for WrestleMania 31 as well. Triple H is being tossed around as a possible feud, and the two did exchange heated words backstage recently on SmackDown.
Like Hogan, safety concerns are also being cited as a possible reason for the match to never see the light of day. The Rock left WrestleMania 29 with numerous injuries, and since then has taken to one-shot appearances on Raw and SmackDown. A serious injury could potentially hurt Johnson's film career. After starring in films like Fast and Furious 6, Hercules, G.I. Joe and the upcoming DC Comics film Shazam as the main villain Black Adam, Johnson likely won't be looking to do anything that puts him at serious risk.
Even if returning stars like The Rock and Hulk Hogan don't make an appearance at WrestleMania next year, you could always make the matches happen yourself in WWE 2K15. Sure, it won't be as good as the real thing, but at least that way nobody gets hurt.
