Nvidia seems to be learning its lesson about the memory controversy surrounding the GeForce GTX 970 the hard way, agreeing to refund each customer in the United States with $30 to settle the lawsuit it's facing.
Of course, that's good news for those who bought the video card in question, and it's a safe bet to assume that everyone who's eligible is probably up and about figuring out how to claim their compensation.
With that said, here's how the GeForce GTX 970 owners can claim their $30 refund:
Step 1: Double check the date of your purchase. If it's between Sept. 1, 2014 and Aug. 24, 2016, then you're good to go — that is, if you meet the requirement of the following step.
Step 2: Make sure you purchased your card from Nvidia, an authorized reseller or one of the component maker's partners such as Asus, Gigabyte and EVGA, to name a few. Take note that you may also be qualified for the reimbursement if you bought a readily built PC that's loaded with the GeForce GTX 970.
Step 3: If you're clear of the criteria, then head on over to the official refund website. There, you can read up on more of the details, and if you're done with that, you can go ahead and file a claim.
Note: Before taking off, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First is that the deadline is on Nov. 30, as the settlement is expected to be finalized in December. Second, there's no limit to the number of submissions, but a proof of purchase is required.
As a little refresher of what went down, the GeForce GTX 970 was touted to be capable of pushing out 4 GB worth of VRAM, but after it hit the shelves, testers discovered that it could only go up to 3.5 GB. On top of that, Nvidia also said that it has 64 render outputs when in fact it only has 56, serving as the cherry on top of the issue that sparked the lawsuit.
To boil things down, the video card itself is still considered as one of the best out there despite the problems surrounding it, as it comes at a pretty reasonable price tag and delivers great performance. In other words, this little kickback just makes the purchase all the more worthwhile.
