HTC is again teasing its upcoming event on Sept. 20, but it will likely not unveil the rumored Google Nexus/Pixel smartphones just yet.
While the two purported Pixel handsets made by HTC are highly anticipated and should debut sometime in the not-so-distant future, HTC's Sept. 20 event will most likely focus on new smartphones for its Desire family of upper-midrange devices.
The rumored HTC Desire 10 Pro could be the star of the show, rocking pretty sharp specifications if recent leaks are anything to go by. Based on recent rumors, the Desire 10 Pro could boast a 5.1-inch QHD display (2,560 x 1,440 pixels), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, and a solid 4 GB of RAM.
Other purported specs include a 12-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front shooter and 32 GB of native storage space, likely expandable via microSD.
HTC previously teased its Sept. 20 event late last month and the device featured in that video closely resembled leaked images of the purported HTC Desire 10 Pro.
The latest teaser from HTC doesn't offer more details, but it hints in the same direction: Desire over Pixel, with the same #BeEdgier tagline.
Aside from the Desire 10 Pro, HTC could also unveil the more modest and pocket-friendly Desire 10 Lifestyle. The more affordable Desire addition is expected to sport a 5-inch HD display (1,280 x 720 pixels), a Snapdragon 400 processor, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal locker space.
Both the Desire 10 Pro and the Desire 10 Lifestyle will likely debut with Android Marshmallow on board and get the latest Nougat flavor later on, through a software upgrade.
The highly anticipated Google Nexus/Pixel handsets, meanwhile, will most likely make their debut at a separate Google event in early October, rocking top-notch specs and features and Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. Recent whispers suggest Google will drop the Nexus branding in favor of Pixel, but it remains unconfirmed for now.
Regardless of whether the new line of Google smartphones will bear the Nexus or the Pixel moniker, Google typically makes the announcement at an event of its own, not tagging along the event of the company manufacturing the devices.
With this in mind, HTC's Sept. 20 event will likely involve only its new Desire smartphones, while the Nexus/Pixel ones made in collaboration with Google will get their own spotlight the following month.
With that said, it remains to be seen whether HTC would be able to relive its glory days. The company was once among the top contenders in the smartphone market, making huge waves with its HTC One a few years back, but has been on the decline in recent years. The renewed partnership with Google may get the ball back in its court, but it will still have strong rivals to beat.
Until then, the new HTC Desire smartphones may turn some heads if they're attractively priced, offering good bang for the buck.
