'The Last Of Us Remastered' To Have Native 4K Support On The PS4 Pro

The Last of Us Remastered will run at 4K resolution on the PlayStation 4 Pro.

The news comes from Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter who attended the recent PlayStation Meeting in which both the PlayStation 4 Slim and PlayStation 4 Pro were unveiled. While PS4 Pro's demo for the game didn't meet most expectations, especially those who streamed the event online, the Digital Foundry correspondent brought out a welcome piece of news.

The Last of Us Remastered wasn't running on 4K during the PS4 Pro demo. That bit is clear. However, Leadbetter notes that the game has the ability to toggle between 1080p and 4K, as well as turn HDR on and off. Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Remastered developer, also informed the reporter of some juicier details regarding the game at 4K.

"The PlayStation 4 version has that 30 Hz mode, which has higher resolution shadow maps but otherwise it's just a locked 30 fps... on the PS4 Pro version, you keep the enhanced shadow map detail but you also get native 4K," says Leadbetter of what the developer told him. "So yeah, we have actually got a confirmed case of full native 4K game that will be available for the PlayStation 4 Pro launch."

As to why the developers didn't demo the game on 4K resolution, it still remains to be answered.

Other games that were demoed during the event, such as Infamous First Light, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn, have the ability to toggle between 4K and 1080p resolution and turn HDR on and off.

Toggling between resolutions can be fun. Needless to say, however, the upscaling from 1080p to 4K will cause the fps to drop. With the PS4 Pro, it still boils down to what the gamer prefers: better frames rates or higher resolution?

Then comes a bigger problem of actually buying a 4K display that can showcase the best of what the PS4 Pro can do. 4K displays are pretty costly, and 4K displays with HDR are even more so.

Those that choose to stick with their 1080p displays or opt to play on it aren't without their rewards either.

"You're gonna get 60 fps gameplay and they are promising that performance there will be better than it was on the PS4," Leadbetter says of The Last of Us Remastered's 1080p gameplay on the PS4 Pro.

The PlayStation 4 Pro is set to roll out on Nov. 10 for $399. Preorders are now available. The video below contains Richard Leadbetter's interview.
