Ask any Star Wars fan what their favorite film in the franchise is and there is a good chance Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back will be at the top of the list. It's filled with iconic Star Wars moments and characters that have come to define the franchise, from Darth Vader proclaiming "I am your father," to the introduction of ancient Jedi master Yoda.
It's for that reason this shot-for-shot remake of Empire Strikes Back, fully endorsed by Lucasfilm, is so great. It lets passionate fans take their favorite scenes from the film and insert their own creativity into them.
Nearly every type of filmmaking is represented, from home video style cardboard box costumes, to beautiful hand-drawn animation. The film even includes stop-motion scenes featuring Star Wars action figures. And that essential "I am your father" scene? Staying true to the real meaning of the Internet, it was filmed with cats.
Since 2013, Lucasfilm has collected more than 1,500 submissions for the project, each 15-seconds in length. The result is more than 480 fan-made segments hand-selected, edited and all mushed together to create The Empire Strikes Back Uncut. You can watch the video above, but as previously stated, it is a full-length remake of the film. You might want to grab some popcorn.
This isn't the first time a project like this has been done. Lucasfilm did it for the original Star Wars film back in 2010 as well. The project even won an Emmy.
The projects just seem fitting in so many ways. Star Wars inspired countless big-name directors today, including Star Wars Episode VII director J.J. Abrams, to get into the business of movie making. By Lucasfilm allowing directors young and old to participate in recreating The Empire Strikes Back, they may have inspired countless more.
