For five years, the cast of FX's raunchy, animated spy romp Archer has worked for the International Secret Intelligence Service. Yep, that spells ISIS. And for obvious reasons, Archer and his friends can't work there anymore.
Stupid terrorists.
With the recent rise of the dangerous, real-life organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, producers of Archer found themselves with no choice but to remove their own ISIS organization from the show. In the show, ISIS will be absorbed into the CIA when it returns in January 2015. The change reportedly happens without any fanfare as two workers remove the ISIS logo in the background in the opening moments of Season 6.
"We were waiting for it to go away — at least I was," creator Adam Reed told The Daily Beast. "Back in Season 5, FX said, 'This might be a thing,' and I thought, 'Maybe it won't be? Maybe it'll be the mole that I'm gonna ignore and nothing will happen.'"
But as we all know, it did happen. And aside from the inconvenience of having to change their story, there's another big mess the real-world ISIS has caused.
"I gave my Dad one of the ISIS hats," said Reed, "and he said, 'You know son, I'm not going to be able to wear the hat anymore. I'm gettin' looks at the hardware store.'"
Reed sadly assumes that FX's stockpiles of ISIS merchandise will now end up in "a landfill somewhere." Unsurprisingly, all all products with the ISIS logo have already been removed from the FX store.
It's a sad world we live in.
