Motorola Moto G Play Hits US, Joining Amazon Prime Exclusive Roster At Just $99

Motorola's cheap Moto G Play is now available for purchase in the United States via Amazon and it's even more affordable, launching as Amazon's latest Prime exclusive phone offer.

Amazon's phone lineup for Prime members offers good deals on affordable unlocked phones, and the Moto G Play is the latest one to join the roster. Amazon Prime members can now get the smartphone for just $99.99, which is $50 off the normal retail price.

For those unfamiliar with the Motorola Moto G Play, it's a modest and affordable smartphone with a 5-inch HD (720p) display, a quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 2 GB of RAM and Android 6.0 Marshmallow, among the highlights.

Other specs include 16 GB of native storage space, microSD support for up to 128 GB of extra storage, an 8-megapixel main camera and a 5-megapixel front shooter. Google's suite of mobile services such as Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube and Google Play are preinstalled, and the smartphone is compatible with all major carriers in the United States.

That $99.99 price point is for the unlocked smartphone on Amazon Prime, but there's a catch: for that $50 discount, users will get personalized offers and ads on the phone's lock screen. Amazon uses the same scheme with its Kindle e-readers, and many people think it's a good tradeoff for a substantial discount. Simply unlocking the device will dismiss the ad, but users can also tap to learn more about a specific offer displayed on the lock screen.

For those who would rather not see any ads, Amazon is also offering an ad-free version of the smartphone, but without that $50 discount. Both Prime and non-Prime members can get the standard, ad-free version of the Moto G Play at $149.99.

Other smartphones in Amazon's Prime exclusive phone offers include the Moto G and the BLU R1 HD, which reportedly outsold all other unlocked handsets on Amazon since this program launched in late June.

The Moto G Play is more modestly specced compared with the Moto G, but it's also the most affordable model in Motorola's Moto G series under Lenovo's umbrella.

If you're looking for a reliable and budget-friendly Android smartphone and don't mind a few ads and offers on the lock screen, the unlocked Moto G Play at $99.99 seems like a pretty good deal.

To take advantage of this offer, head over to Amazon. The handset is available for preorder starting today and will start shipping to customers on Sept. 15.
