Google, Huawei To Release 7-Inch Tablet Within The Year: Nexus 7 Successor On The Way?

Google, which found great success with the ASUS-manufactured Nexus 7 Android-powered tablet that was last released in 2013, is said to be preparing to release the device's long-awaited successor before the year ends.

Notorious leaker Evan Blass tweeted that Google is planning to release a 7-inch tablet that will feature 4 GB of RAM.

In the tweet, Blass also noted that the device will be produced by Huawei, which is also Google's manufacturing partner for last year's Google Nexus 6P smartphone.

Blass, who has been a very reliable source for news in the tech industry, did not specify any additional details for the upcoming tablet.

News on the Nexus 7 successor first surfaced in December of last year, when it was expected to be launched by Google by as early as May. The next-generation Nexus 7 will be coming with flagship specifications and the latest version of Android and will draw inspiration from the Google Pixel C tablet.

What exactly the specifications are for the device were hazy then, and with Blass' tweet bearing only information on the tablet's RAM, the details of the Nexus 7 successor are still fuzzy.

It was previously reported that the new Nexus 7 will either be powered by Huawei's Kirin 950 chipset or the Nvidia Tegra X1 processor found in the Google Pixel C. In addition, it was said that the tablet might be carrying only 2 GB of RAM, but with Blass stating that it will instead have 4 GB of RAM, this could mean that the earlier reported possible specifications have been upgraded by Google.

In April, Huawei filed for a trademark for "Huawei 7P," which is likely referring to the upcoming tablet. In the same month and in the month when it was first expected to be announced, it was said that the tablet will be powered instead by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 with 4 GB of RAM and expandable memory of up to 2 TB.

In addition, it is not clear if the tablet will be carrying the Nexus branding. The only tablet that Google is selling right now is the Pixel C, and with the company dropping the Nexus name for its upcoming smartphones and naming them the Pixel and Pixel XL, Google might decide to move ahead with such a naming convention for the Nexus 7 successor.

Google is holding an event on Oct. 4, wherein the company is expected to unveil the Pixel, the Pixel XL, a 4K-capable Chromecast and a viewer for the Daydream VR initiative. It is very likely that the new tablet will also be announced at the event, so the exact details of the device will be known soon.
