Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare broke new ground earlier this year when it came to YouTube, but not exactly the kind of ground Activision and Infinity Ward wanted it to break. The game's announcement trailer currently holds the distinction of being the most-disliked trailer on YouTube of all time, after legions of fans downvoted the game for various reasons.
Just in case you thought all of the Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare hate had gone away in recent months, here's a spoiler alert: it hasn't. Two new multiplayer trailers for the game are being downvoted in the exact same way as the announcement trailer, as fans take to the comments to bash on this year's installment of the juggernaut shooter franchise.
The hate is still strong, it seems. Both the multiplayer reveal trailer and multiplayer overview video currently sport close to 1,000 more dislikes than likes, and it seems like every comment left on the videos (of which there are many) are negative.
One top comment on the reveal trailer simply reads, "This isn't Call of Duty," while another writes, "this game may be worse than I originally thought." There are a few defenders to be found in the comments section of each trailer, but for the most part, it's not good.
The funny thing is that it's painfully clear Activision is trying to ease fan concerns. During the live stream reveal of the game's multiplayer, an Activision spokesperson onstage repeatedly stressed how great the fans are and how their "passion" drives them. Activision also seems to be making the point that, despite the game's futuristic look and crazy new weapons and abilities, it's still old-fashioned Call of Duty at its core. The franchise's continued focus on sci-fi is one aspect with which longtime fans of the series have taken issue.
So far, it doesn't seem like many of them are convinced that the series is moving in the right direction. Will that translate into poorer-than-usual sales of the game series this year? Will the vocal fans leaving comments and downvoting put their money where their mouths are and refuse to buy this year's installment? Or are all the people commenting and downvoting simply trolls who had no interest in buying Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare in the first place?
That's the big question. Activision previously didn't seem too worried about the negative reception when the game was first revealed, but having nothing but negative fan feedback about its product has to be making somebody worried. It all will come down to the sale numbers when the game launches on Nov. 4. Until then, all we can do is watch the fireworks.
