'Overwatch' Will Be Free To Play On PS4 Sept. 9-12, No PS Plus Required

Blizzard's colorful hero shooter Overwatch is still going strong, with new maps and characters on the way in the form of free updates. Soon, however, the entire game will be free, if only for one weekend.

From Sept. 9 to 12, Overwatch will be completely free to play on PlayStation 4. Interested players can take the entire game for a spin, including the game's complete roster of 22 characters and full assortment of maps. The only piece of the Overwatch experience that won't be available for free for players is the game's competitive mode.

Players who play during the free weekend can still rank up and earn loot boxes just like regular players, and all of those unlocks and progress will carry over if a player decides to purchase the full game after the free weekend concludes. That being said, trophies are locked during the free weekend, so players looking to boost PSN levels for cheap are out of luck. The free version of Overwatch will be available to download starting on Sept. 5, though it won't be playable until Sept. 9. The game is a 15 GB download.

Making the deal even sweeter is the fact that a PlayStation Plus subscription isn't required to play the free version of Overwatch, which means even more players will be able to give the game a try. That being said, it should be noted that you'll need a PS Plus subscription to play the full version of Overwatch should you choose to purchase it after the free weekend wraps up. You can read more about the free weekend on the official PlayStation blog.

This isn't the first free multiplayer weekend on Sony's console. Games like Destiny and Star Wars Battlefront have been playable for free in months past as well. The free weekend comes just as Sony has announced a $10 price increase for its yearly PS Plus subscription, up to $60 from $50.

In recent Overwatch news, Blizzard revealed the game's next free map will be set in a German castle. The map is currently on the game's public test realm for PC and is expected to officially release on all platforms soon. Blizzard is also teasing players about a new character named Sombra via numerous clues, though players have yet to fully crack the code. There's no telling when exactly Sombra may arrive, but here's hoping it's soon.
