Say Hello To The Asus ZenWatch 3: Snapdragon Wear 2100, 4 GB Storage, 1.39-Inch AMOLED Display

Asus recently unveiled its ZenWatch 3 at IFA 2016 in Berlin, and previous rumors and leaks that reported the smartwatch as holstering a round display were right on the mark.

Anterior models of ZenWatch made use of square-like form factor, with rounded corners.

The latest addition in the ZenWatch family features a refined shape that takes a leaf out of the design traditionally associated with analog timepieces. The premium feeling is backed by the two supersized buttons from the right side of the watch, as well as the crown.

Looking at the previously rumored (and now confirmed) round display of the smartwatch, we find a 1.39-inch AMOLED screen sporting a resolution of 400 x 400 pixels, which gives the device a respectable 287 ppi. To keep the screen away from scratches and the occasional drop incident, Asus gifted it with a layer of curved Corning Gorilla Glass.

Future customers of the ZenWatch 3 should know that it comes in three color options: Rose Gold, Silver and Gunmetal, and it's built out of 316L stainless steel. The trio of colors comes with a rose-gold bezel, regardless of the main finishing.

This could prove to be a two-edged sword for the manufacturer. While some smartwatch fans are in love with the gold-colored highlight, a large number of gadget users are averse to owning anything in gold, especially a wrist piece. It remains to be seen if the posh, eye-catching color choice of the bezel acts as a repellant to Asus' clients.

The thickness of the ZenWatch 3 stays a bit below 10 millimeters (0.39 inches), which places the gadget in the range of the thinnest smartwatches on the market.

Those who want to play with the straps of the device can do so, as the manufacturer offers both a stitched Italian leather and a rubber strap. Both straps come in beige or dark brown color options.

Under ZenWatch 3's chassis sits Android Wear 2.0, which comes with more than 50 watch faces so you never get bored. Asus embedded the ZenFit activity tracking app in its latest wearable, making sure that ZenWatch 3 users get an automated step count and inactivity reminders throughout the day. The OEM touts that the accuracy of the ZenFit goes as high as 95 percent.

The processing power of the device comes via a Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC, which is a custom chipset built with smartwatches in mind. Backing the SoC there are 512 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal storage.

Keeping the juice running in the device is a 340 mAh battery, which falls in line with most standard power sources for a watch of this size. Those who are always on the run should know that ZenWatch 3 comes with Asus Hypercharge technology, which the manufacturer claims can take the wearable from 0 to 60 percent of battery power in only 15 minutes.

ZenWatch 3 will land in stores later this year, and its European price is said to be 229 EUR ($255). The company did not go into further details about the launch, but you can rely on us to share the info as soon as it becomes public.
