Microsoft's official Surface Instagram account suggests that the company is making efforts to release a new hinge system with its Surface Book 2.
Most of the time, when companies give inside info via their social media accounts, people regard them as "controlled leaks." Sometimes, it's just a sloppy Photoshop retouching that's to blame.
It seems that the latter is not the case with the recent unveiling made on the Surface's official Instagram. The new image of the upcoming 2-in-1 gadget comes with the tagline "Your key to success," showing that the Surface Book will see some important improvements in its design.
Daniel Rubino, editor-in-chief of Windows Central, explains that the rendering is truly a screenshot from the Surface Book 2's upcoming concept video.
He goes on to say that the image in question is not a photo, but that the video containing it made some rounds "within Microsoft's various departments." Rubino acknowledges that the image could have been leaked simply as an error, but deems that unlikely. This means that there is a high chance that Microsoft is purposefully teasing the new Surface Book 2.
So, could we really be getting a new improved hinge in the next Surface Book model?
The image suggests so, as it shows it sports a lower number of ridges than the current Surface Book. Another thing to keep in mind is that the leaked rendering depicts a new design and not a mere revamping of the first edition.
Users might be curious if the gadget is indeed black or it's just a filtering issue. Take this with a grain of salt, but keep in mind that internal prototypes are black. However, no solid rumor has surfaced concerning Microsoft's choice of color for its upcoming Surface device.
When looking at the scheduled timing for the release, there is also little news on that front.
Insiders from the company have touted that Microsoft could organize a Devices event in October in New York. Another source indicates that the company might use the spring of next year to roll out new hardware alongside Windows 10 Redstone 2.
Some of the devices the OEM is working on are the Surface Book 2, Surface All-in-One (AIO) and the mysterious Surface Phone. You can read more about the enterprise-targeted handset here.
The lineup leads us to believe that the Instagram post is actually a subtle teaser for a fall launch, which might contain all or only some of the aforementioned devices.
Stay tuned to be the first to find out what Microsoft is cooking up.
