Apple will be adding 100 new emojis to the upcoming version of its mobile operating system, iOS 10, but it seems that the company is still looking to add more to that number.
Apple has requested for the Unicode Consortium to add five new emojis to the existing list of options, with software engineer Peter Edberg sending in the proposal to the Unicode Technical Committee.
The Unicode Consortium is the non-profit organization that is tasked to standardize the emojis that users can access across all hardware and operating systems. The group consists of representatives from major tech industry players such as Apple, Microsoft and Google, along with individuals who develop, review and maintain the emoji standard.
Apple's proposal for five new emojis was spotted by Emojipedia, with the document containing sample images for the job-related emoji. Specifically, the jobs being portrayed in the emoji are an artist, an astronaut, a firefighter, a judge and a pilot, with all five coming in male and female versions.
Apple has requested the emojis to be both diverse and inclusive, as per the other recent changes that have been made by the Unicode Consortium. The company also provided fallback examples on how the professions can be conveyed through currently available emoji, such as the astronaut represented by the emoji of a man or woman followed by a rocket ship. The proposed emojis of Apple, however, will allow the jobs to be shown with just one emoji.
Jeremy Burge, a member of the Unicode Consortium, confirmed that the proposed emojis by Apple will be included in the Unicode Emoji Version 4.0 update. The update, which is being planned to be released in November after a two-month review period, includes the addition of male and female variations for existing emojis, new flag emojis, emoji upgrades to non-emoji characters such as the male and female signs and support for more skin tones.
Including the five new job emojis that Apple proposed, there are 16 new professional emojis in Unicode Emoji Version 4.0, which is a total of 32 new emojis when taken into account their male and female versions.
In Apple's announcement on emojis for iOS 10, the company noted that it has removed the rifle emoji and replaced it with a lime green water gun, which is one of the over 100 new emojis coming along with the operating system update.
The public release of Apple's iOS 10 is expected to be sometime in the fall.
