AT&T is pushing out a software update for the LG V10 that will bring Wi-Fi calling to the smartphone.
On Monday, Aug. 22, the carrier confirmed that the new software is being rolled out to the LG device over-the-air (OTA), which will bring the software to version H90021v.
LG announced the V10 in September 2015 and it hit the shelves in October that year. The LG V10 came running on Android 5.1 Lollipop and received Android 6.0 Marshmallow on AT&T in April this year.
Although a ton of smartphones are available in the market, only a handful of them support Wi-Fi calling. On AT&T, the LG G4 was the first Android smartphone in the list of mobile devices that support the feature. A number of iPhones also support Wi-Fi calling on the network. Apart from AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint support it in the U.S as well.
Wi-Fi calling is easy to set up and once enabled, it works automatically. The feature allows users to text and talk over a Wi-Fi connection. The feature also allows users to text and talk in places where cellular signal is not available. It does not need a separate number or app.
The smartphone feature can be very beneficial for people who travel within the U.S. or outside the country. AT&T's Wi-Fi calling is available within the U.S. and also in other countries.
"Once you set up Wi-Fi Calling on your phone, you'll be able to enjoy the benefits. Wi-Fi Calling billing is based on the number being called or messaged and is the same no matter where the Wi-Fi network connection is made," says AT&T.
Customers should note that all texts sent or received via Wi-Fi calling will be treated and charged similarly to regular SMS messages.
AT&T notes that customers can make or receive domestic calls at no additional charge and with no impact on their voice call airtime usage. However, international calls via Wi-Fi calling will be billed according to the subscriber's international calling package.
The carrier suggests that LG V10 customers should have sufficient battery on their phone (at least 50 percent) and it should be connected to a strong Wi-Fi Network to experience a seamless installation process of the latest software update.
LG V10 owners on AT&T should soon get a notification on their phone about the update but they can manually check for it in Settings under the General tab and then About Phone > Update Center > Software Update > Update Now.
