Tesla Model S, Model X Get Improvements Across The Board: Longer Range, Larger Batteries And More Speed

Tesla is rolling out new battery options for the Model S and Model X, and as a result, they get better range and acceleration and more speed on the road.

According to the electric car maker, these improvements make the sedan with Ludicrous mode the third fastest production vehicle. While the SUV is already the quickest, the larger battery pack allows it to set the bar even higher.

Model S P100D

To start things off, the Model S P100D with Ludicrous mode can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds.

Tesla admits that it's no LaFerrari or Porsche 918 Spyder, but it goes on to boast that the electric sedan doesn't cost more than $1 million and offer seats up to five adults and two children with better cargo capacity to boot, making it more practical in everyday life.

Now, thanks to the new 100 kWh battery, the range of the Model S P100D is estimated to reach 315 miles on a single charge. In light of that, it makes the record of being the first production electric vehicle to go more than 300 miles.

Model X P100D

Next up, the Model X P100D with Ludicrous mode can now go 0 to 60 mph in only 2.9 seconds. Needless to say, that's an impressive feat, especially considering that it's purely electric and capable of comfortably seating up to seven adults.

Of course, the 100 kWh battery pack also increase its range, and it can now travel up to an estimated 289 miles on a single charge.

The Costs

To get ahold of the new electric powerhouses, customers will have to fork over $134,500 for the Model S P100D and $135,500 for the Model X P100D.

Customers who have placed an order for a P90D with Ludicrous mode but haven't received their delivery yet can pay up $10,000 for an upgrade to the 100 kWh battery, but for current owners, they will have to cough up $20,000 because their batteries will have to be recycled.

If the prices are a little too much, the electric car maker also started new two-year lease programs for the Model S and Model X recently, which are on-demand options.

The Bottom Line

Both the Model S and Model X are pretty pricey, but they do give customers who want to switch from gasoline to pure electric a bang for their buck. On top of that, the new 100 kWh battery just makes them even more appealing.

Interestingly enough, Tesla points out that every customer who purchases a P100D vehicle will help the development of the Model 3, the smaller and cheaper alternative out of the bunch.

"While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle, we want to emphasize that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development," the company says.

This comes hot on the heels of when reports about Tesla receiving approval to launch the P100D versions made rounds online.
