Microsoft's Project Scorpio is the next hot video game console set for the holiday season of 2017. It's the company's answer to Sony's PlayStation 4 Neo, an upgraded PS4 that could be released before the end of 2016.
Ever since Project Scorpio was announced at E3 2016, the talks of the console being able to offer true 4K gaming has been high and wide. Many believed that six teraflops of overall GPU power isn't enough due to the amount of power required for PC games.
Some say Microsoft is just blowing hot air but Aaron Greenberg, head of Xbox Game Marketing, is ready to prove the doubters wrong.
In a recent interview with DualShockers, Greenberg revealed that Microsoft is confident it can bring true 4K gaming to the console audience. He did mention that this has already found its way to the PC, and gamers there are spending a lot of cash to play their favorite titles at 4K resolutions.
The goal right now is to bring that level of video game intensity to console gamers, but we doubt it's going to be that easy.
Already, several developers are working on 4K games for the PC, which will likely transfer over well to Project Scorpio when the console hits store shelves in 2017. The games in question are Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4 and Halo Wars 2.
We've seen Forza Horizon 4 in glorious 4K via IGN, and we have to say, it looks the part.
As for the cost of Project Scorpio, Greenberg did not give any specific details, but he did say the console will be a premium product. We take that statement as saying it won't be cheap, but then again, Microsoft could surprise us all.
"[It] is going to be a very high-end product," says Greenberg in an interview with DualShockers. "[W]e're not talking at all about any more details about that, but what I can tell you is that what's exciting for me is that the fact that we can tell people now 'we're gonna bring a whole new console, with a whole new set of capabilities' and be able to innovate with the hardware without sacrificing compatibility, is something that really hasn't been done before in the console space."
Greenberg also went on to say that all Xbox One accessories and games will crossover to Project Scorpio. While it's something Microsoft is excited about, it's also something gamers are excited about as well. And this is why the company is saying there will be no more console generations after Project Scorpio because every game should work on the newest console. Meaning, gamers can upgrade to the latest consoles for the next 15 years and all their games from previous devices will follow them.
Microsoft's vision of ending the console generation and Xbox Play Anywhere should be an interesting road to follow in the coming years. It should also be interesting to see how Sony responds.
The company is rumored to launch PlayStation 4 Neo in September, and there are also rumors of a slim PlayStation 4 in the cards.
