It's been a long time coming, but a number of requested features will soon be one step closer to rolling out for all PlayStation 4 users. The long-in-the-works system update 4.0 is moving into public beta soon, and at long last, Sony is detailing most, but not all, of what gamers can expect from the update.
Leading the charge is the arrival of folders, one of the most long-requested features for the console. PS4 owners will soon be able to create folders via the content launcher and app library, allowing players to group together frequently-used or similar games and apps for quick access. The games and apps tab on the PS4 will only display installed games and apps in update 4.0, which should help declutter player libraries and make content easier to find. A number of new sorting options will also arrive with the update, including the ability to sort library content by purchase date.
Trophies are also seeing a number of improvements in update 4.0. With the update, players will at long last be able to view trophies while offline. For trophy hunters, Sony is also adding the ability to let you view the content of a hidden trophy, though the info will still be hidden by default. No more having to scour the internet for hidden trophy details!
However, it's not just trophies and folders that are coming in the update. The entire user interface will see changes as well. Redesigned system icons, updated popup notifications and more are all coming in the update, as are some big changes to the PS4's quick menu. In update 4.0, pressing the PS button on the dualshock 4 controller will bring up a menu that only takes up a portion of the screen and includes information on friends, parties and more. The PS4 share menu is also seeing similar improvements, as it will now only take up a portion of the screen. User profiles are also getting an overhaul, and players will be able to add a background image to their profile for extra personalization.
These are just some of the biggest changes coming in the PS4 update 4.0, but they aren't the only ones. Sony says there are a number of other features coming in the update that won't be included in the beta. Sony says more details on the update, including the date of its arrival for all users, will be coming in the weeks ahead.
