After nine years of working on Pokémon Uranium and releasing it just a week ago, the developers decided to take it down to respect Nintendo's wishes.
Before the download links were removed, the game was downloaded more than 1.5 million times, showing just how popular it really is. However, that kind of attention also caused it to go under Nintendo's radar, and just like what happened to the fan-made AM2R: Another Metroid 2 Remake, it is now down and out.
"After receiving more than 1,500,000 downloads of our game, we have been notified of multiple takedown notices from lawyers representing Nintendo of America. While we have not personally been contacted, it's clear what their wishes are, and we respect those wishes deeply. Therefore, we will no longer provide official download links for the game through our website," the team behind the game says, advising players who are planning on looking for it via unofficial sources to be "extremely cautious."
For the curious, Pokémon Uranium rolled out on Aug. 6 for the PC, and it features more than 150 new Pokémon to catch and some familiar faces that mutated because of the radiation in the area. Set in the all-new Tandor region, the player is task with battling these wild Pokémon and, as expected, collecting gym badges and becoming a true Pokémon master. Trainers can even choose among three genders: male, female and neutral.
To make things even more interesting, it introduces a new type that mixes up the battle scene called Nuclear, which is appropriate to the game's theme. Pokémon of that type are strong against any other, but with the blade cutting both ways, they are also weak against every type, even against Normal.
At first glance, it sports a similar vibe as the original Game Boy Pokémon titles, and because of that, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise why it's appealing to many fans of the franchise.
To boil things down, Pokémon Uranium is no longer available at the official website of the developers, and getting ahold of a copy from other sources comes with a risk. Nevertheless, the effort and creation that the makers put up is nothing less than impressive.
