Fans of American Horror Story have been dying to know just exactly what the upcoming sixth season will be about. We all thought there were some clues as to what's in store this time around when FX debuted a series of teasers for the new season.
It turns out that everything that we thought we knew is all just a lie.
Instead, the network has been playing with us all along in an attempt to keep the audience guessing and continue to keep things a big mystery.
The series of promos released seemed to tease at a potential connection to season 1's Murder House — something showrunner Ryan Murphy hinted could be a possibility — with a look at a bassinet with a mobile of weapons and a monstrous hand.
However, the other promos alluded to possible aliens with green eyes, people being kept captive in a basement and a creepy farmhouse.
Some theories floating around have been that AHS season 6 could follow some kind of Texas Chainsaw Massacre theme, tell the story of Charles Manson or even explore the mystery behind the Lost Colony of Croatoan after photos from the set surfaced.
It turns out that nothing is really revealed about this season in any of the promos — expect for one.
During the Television Critic's Association's press tour on Tuesday, FX CEO John Landgraf revealed that this season's theme will continue to be a mystery and that some of the promos were released to intentionally "misdirect" viewers.
"Every year, we've basically laid out the themes, the new genre that Ryan's going to be approaching, and we just thought [this year] it'd be really fun to keep it a mystery," said Landgraf. "There are many more trailers than you've actually seen for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story — different genres, different places. One of them is accurate; the others are all misdirects."
While the show's creators are having fun playing with our emotions, it still could very well be a possibility that this season is about the Lost Colony, and the promo with the shadows in Puritan-like clothing is actually the one that reveals something about this season.
Hopefully, all the gross bug promos are just a way to spook us and have nothing to do with the theme or main plot.
What we do know is that AHS alumni Sarah Paulson is officially returning for the new season. The actress confirmed she is coming back for season 6 on Tuesday, although her mouth was stitched when it came to spilling any details about her character.
Other cast members coming back this season are Cheyenne Jackson, Lady Gaga and Angela Bassett.
American Horror Story season 6 premiers on FX on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 10 p.m. ET.
