The 2014 Maserati Ghibli has earned itself the 'Top Safety Pick' award for 2013 from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).
The 2014 Ghibli was unveiled at the Shanghai auto show in April this year and is also the first Maserati car, which ran through one of the major U.S. crash-test systems.
The car received a "good" rating in four categories: the moderate front overlap test, side impact test, roof strength test, and head restraint and seat performance in a rear-end collision.
On November 26, Maserati announced that the 2014 Ghibli will have a starting price tag of $65,600 and the company has already started delivering the car to its retain network across North America. The previous models of Ghibli had two doors; however, the latest 2014 Ghibli has four doors. At a relatively low price, the 2014 Ghibli has been successful in entering the luxury sedan segment and may give competition to well-known luxury cars such as Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, Porsche Panamera and Audi A7.
"The all-new 2014 Maserati Ghibli represents a break from the ordinary in the mid-size sedan segment," said Peter Grady, Maserati North America, Inc.'s president and Chief executive officer. "Luxury sport sedan drivers can now enjoy the style and performance expected of a Maserati, and the assurance of its status as a 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick."
The 2014 Ghibli is equipped with a seven-airbag protection system, which will protect its occupants from any collision injuries. The car has two-stage airbags at the front, which are concealed inside the steering wheel and dashboard. The front airbags are aimed to protect the head, face and chest of occupants in case of frontal accidents. The knee airbag will also protect the driver's legs. Furthermore, the chest and hips of the front occupants will be protected with side airbags located beneath the seat.
The sides of the occupants' heads are also protected by two head curtain bags, which are mounted on the roof of the car. These airbags protect the heads of the front as well as rear occupants of the car against side collision.
IIHS has already given the 2014 Maserati Ghibli the Top Safety Pick award and now the company will hope to increase sales promoting the safety aspects of the car, which may be the priority for many potential customers.
