The next-gen version of the flagship Galaxy S7 smartphone from Samsung — which is also available in a curved screen model, that is, the Galaxy S7 edge — will possibly ditch the flat screen option in favor of the curved variant.
That's right, if this is to be believed, the Galaxy S8 will only have one variant and not two like its predecessors. Samsung is apparently considering sticking to the dual-edge screen for its Galaxy S smartphone lineup. The news come straight from the horse's mouth — its mobile chief Dong-jin Koh — who spilled the beans at a media interview in New York.
"Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen)," revealed Dong-jin Koh.
While the Samsung mobile chief's statement does not necessarily imply that it will indeed take the step and discontinue the regular model, the idea that the company is considering the option increases the possibility, especially in light of recent developments.
Samsung is now completely capable of manufacturing sufficient curved display panels without encountering any major hiccups. The company is also looking to distinguish itself from competitors, so this move may give it a distinct identity.
Additionally, the fact that Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note 7 in only the dual-edge model and not the "regular" model as well is an indicator that the company is looking to test the waters. Samsung will likely observe the consumer response and if buyers do not complain about the unavailability of a flat-screen version, then it's a green signal.
This sentiment is echoed by a market expert who notes that the company "will not likely get rid of the flat-screen Galaxy S smartphone model right away, but if the market response is positive with the Note 7, it would surely serve as a cue for Samsung to focus only on the Edge model."
Moreover, the Galaxy S7 edge outsold the flat-screen Galaxy S7 — a statistic that favors the elimination of the latter variant.
Both the Galaxy S7 and S6 also launched in the curved-screen Edge variant. Nevertheless, whether or not the OEM will indeed change things around for its Galaxy S lineup with the arrival of its Galaxy S8 smartphone remains to be seen.
