Microsoft has started rolling out the 1607 upgrade of Windows 10, more commonly known as the Anniversary Update, through the operating system's update service.
The Anniversary Update was released as promised on Aug. 2. Among the things that users can expect from the update are security improvements, enhanced abilities for digital voice assistant Cortana, a better Microsoft Edge browser, more promoted apps and fingerprint support for Windows 10 Mobile.
According to Microsoft's CVP for Windows and devices group core quality Michael Fortin, the Anniversary Update is now being rolled out to all Windows 10 PCs across the world, with Windows 10 mobile phones to begin receiving the update in the coming weeks. The arrival of the update on PCs will be in phases, though, with the newer computers to receive it first.
To get the Anniversary Update, users do not actually have to do anything if they have chosen the option for their Windows 10 PCs to install updates automatically. All that needs to be done is to wait for the update to arrive and become installed on the Windows 10 machine, applicable to Windows 10 Home users.
However, as Fortin notes, for users who cannot wait and want to begin enjoying the contents of the Anniversary Update, there are two ways with which the update can be downloaded manually.
The first method will require users to go to the Settings menu of their Windows 10 PC and select the Updates & Security option, and then, the Windows Update option. In the Windows Update screen, users should then select Check for Updates, which should bring up Windows 10 version 1607. By clicking on the update button, users can initiate the download and installation of the Anniversary Update.
For the second method, users will have to enter the same Windows Update screen detailed in the first method, but instead, they should click on the "Learn more" option just above "Advanced options." Users will then be taken to a support page hosted on Microsoft's official website, and through there, they can download the Anniversary Update's ISO file to their PC.
For users with Windows 10 Pro, they can choose to temporarily delay the Anniversary Update, and for those on Windows 10 Enterprise, the update can be permanently blocked.
The Anniversary Update could lead to interesting new PCs in the market to boost sales, as hardware manufacturers will look to take advantage of the new Windows 10 features that will come along with the update.
