For Overwatch's first seasonal event, the popular multiplayer shooter will be getting into the Olympic spirit with a new game mode named Lucioball that resembles Rocket League, along with limited edition loot boxes.
Lucioball is a brand new brawl that is Overwatch's take on a soccer match, placing gamers in a three-on-three match that features Lucio. The match occurs in the new Estádio das Rãs map, which was built to amplify the abilities of Lucio.
As assistant game director Aaron Keller explains on a Playstation Blog post, mastering Lucioball will require players to understand how Lucio's abilities work in the new game mode. For the brawl, the primary fire of Lucio will be replaced with a melee attack that will have Lucio punch the soccer ball, which is for passing, dribbling and shooting in short range. The secondary attack of Lucio, on the the other hand, creates a sound blast that launches the soccer ball across the map.
Unlike in other Overwatch game modes, Lucio's song will only affect the player, with Amp It Up still capable of increasing the boost. Lastly, the ultimate ability of Lucio, Sound Barrier, will pull the soccer ball toward the player.
Players will be using these abilities in conjunction with the speed-boosting walls and jump pads located around the arena to try to get their team to score the most goals. Each Lucioball match will only last for four minutes, which will make for fun fast-paced matches.
As for the limited edition loot boxes, gamers will be able to earn at least one Olympic-themed item from each one. Among the over 100 seasonal items are new emotes, player icons, sprays, highlight intros and skins, along with a few legendary skins.
The loot boxes can either be purchased or acquired normally through the different game modes. Players who have an eye out for a certain item in the collection will have to acquire as many of the limited edition loot boxes as they can though, as the Olympic-themed items will no longer be available to acquire by Aug. 22. Players are also not allowed to purchase the items with credits.
The Olympics update is now live on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, so gamers should get started with their Lucioball matches and their loot box hoarding before the seasonal event ends in three weeks.
In other recent Overwatch news, a glitch in the game's Nepal Map has been discovered that allows players to explore the next level of the map using two Mercys and some crafty maneuvering.
