If you are a fan of the Yahoo Messenger app and like using the service on your Windows or Mac desktop, then you will be pleased to learn that the desktop app has been upgraded and relaunched in a new and improved form.
In a blog post, Yahoo — which was acquired by Verizon Wireless for $4.83 billion this week — revealed that it has pushed out the updated desktop app for Yahoo Messenger for Mac and Windows PCs.
Earlier in June, we reported that Yahoo had revealed plans of discontinuing the old messenger app called "legacy" Yahoo Messenger. The company also disclosed at the time that the app would be replaced by a new platform that was compatible with both smartphones and the web.
The older Yahoo Messenger desktop app is set to be phased out by the company on Aug. 5, so that it can channel all of its attention on the app's newer version. Moreover, come Sept. 1, the company will also discontinue the "Yahoo Recommends" functionality.
While Yahoo Messenger itself has been around for the last 18 years, the mobile version was introduced in December 2015. With the arrival of popular messaging services for smartphones, Yahoo Messenger's popularity faded. However, with the launch of the revamped Yahoo Messenger app, the company is optimistic that it will bring people back to the platform.
What's New?
The new app for Yahoo Messenger not only offers a clean and new look, but also has a slew of novel features in tow such as the ability to unsend a message, reply to a message via GIFs and share multiple pictures with a mere drag and drop!
"Our new platform provides you with a fast and easy way to send (and unsend) not only messages, but also photos and animated GIFs. Today, we're delighted to announce that you can enjoy all of these features you've grown to know and love in our brand-new Yahoo Messenger desktop app for Windows and Mac," notes the company.
The unsend button will be quite handy for users as it will enable them to retract a message with ease. Using the new feature is also easy, as one simply has to hover the mouse over the GIF or message and tap the unsend icon that surfaces.
Users will also be able to search for an animated GIF they wish to share and add to the conversation.
The new desktop app for Windows and Mac users is now available for download.
