Sega Mega Drive Retro Console And Portable Gaming System Up For Preorder, Gunning For Nintendo

Sega banks on the nostalgia game and has announced its plan to roll out a number of updated retro consoles to make that a reality.

The company wants to celebrate 25 years since the creation of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise by reviving its Mega Drive brand, and what better way to do so than to launch a two-player home console and a mobile gaming system?

Both gaming systems will come from the workbenches of At Games, a Chinese company with a healthy dose of experience in releasing retro consoles. Keep in mind that Sega is not the first enterprise to play the golden days of gaming card, as Nintendo also announced that it will revamp its Classic Mini console to give players a taste of old gaming in updated form.

Sega's console plays nice with original Mega Drive cartridges, features two wireless controllers and works with your TV as the display. Thanks to its SD slot, the console allows gamers to add and rejoice playing additional game ROMs. Meanwhile, the mobile gaming system has a 3.2-inch screen, packs a rechargeable battery and is charged via USB.

The manufacturer managed to design the new Sega gadgets without dropping the original charm. The new console might not be as cool as the original Mega Drive or Genesis, but it maintains the Sega flavor.

The best thing is that both gaming systems arrive pre-loaded with 80 games, with classic titles such as Sonic, Golden Axe 1-3, Comix Zone and Mortal Kombat 1-3. This means that as soon as your console or portable system arrives, you can start mashing buttons and having a good time.

If these details peak your interest, know that both gadgets can be purchased from UK-based retailer FunStockRetro. They are still in preorder state and cost about $65, with shipping expected in October. Keep in mind that the console hardware can be bought from UK-based retailer Smyths, as well. So far, no official word on United States availability has leaked out.

Some expressed their doubts about the hardware quality present in At Games' products, but that should not phase out diehard Sega fans from making the acquisition.

Those who want to ramp up on the excitement of childhood's games, or maybe showcase them to younger players to see the look of astonishment on their faces, can now do so thanks to the new Sega gaming systems.
