The struggle is real for those watching their weight or who prefer to eat healthy foods when they find themselves with family or friends at a fast food establishment, as menus are full of fried chicken and greasy hash browns or fries.
However, fast food chains are listening to the public's need to have more menu items that aren't fried and full of fat. Still, it's the unhealthy food that many customers want when indulging in their cravings — even when it comes to the first meal of the day.
Chick-fil-A just released a new healthy sandwich on Monday as it continues to expand its breakfast menu. Called the Egg White Grill, the new breakfast sandwich is packed with 25 grams of protein to help consumers feel fuller longer and that is only 300 calories.
It features egg whites with American cheese and a "breakfast-sized portion" of grilled chicken on a toasted multigrain English muffin and retails for $3.35.
While Chick-fil-A VP of menu strategy and development David Farmer calls the sandwich "the perfect solution for our health-conscious customers looking for a grab-and-go-breakfast," many foodies aren't too happy with this item because the company has swapped out a beloved sandwich in order to make room for it.
Chick-fil-A confirmed that it will no longer be offering its popular Spicy Chicken Biscuit, and customers immediately began voicing their disappointment. It appears getting rid of such a popular sandwich in order to launch the first new breakfast menu item in six years is not a fair trade.
The bright side is that the Spicy Chicken Sandwich is still available, but customers will have to wait for lunchtime in order to get their fix.
The Egg White Grill marks the first time grilled chicken comes to breakfast at fast food restaurants. Beefing up breakfast menus has been an ongoing trend as of late, allowing establishments to cash in on early morning consumers. McDonald's recently rolled out all-day breakfast, and other fast food chains like Taco Bell also offer breakfast items.
The Egg White Grill is now available in Chick-fil-A locations nationwide — although many are urging on Twitter to boycott the item until the breaded Spicy Chicken Biscuit makes a comeback.
